New Orange Kitty?

It has been a complete year since we lost Tigger and even though we missed him dearly, we were not sad too long. My parents heard his little footsteps in their bedroom pretty soon after and always around midnight. I slept over randomly just in hopes to hear him, but somehow I always missed him. Most cat owners I talked to told me they also have heard their kitties come home and wander their usual places from time to time as if to let you know they were there. We certainly did, and the very odd thing about it was you always knew which cat it was and there was never a doubt that we heard them. Even if we were sleeping, we would wake up and notice. Usually more than one of us hears or senses the same thing but the live cats never did.

My parents have since heard both Mochi and Tigger return (Mochi’s noises have not been around for years), and it was like both were catching up on a lot of missed playtime. What about our previous cats, Smokey and Kitty? We did hear them all come back. Kitty hung around for a month or so. Smokey stayed a good 6 months and disappeared after Tigger arrived. We may have also heard Pebble, our cat before Kitty, but it’s been so long I don’t remember. I have read that spirits come back to visit not because they are stuck, but because they know we missed them. This kind of makes sense for us, or at least it is what makes us feel relieved.

Almost right after Tigger left us, there was this new orange bushy tailed kitty in town, and he belonged to our neighbors two doors to the left. He started coming around and my mother befriended him. “There’s a cat with a really bushy tail in our yard! A really big bushy tail!” Dad met him and this cat let him pet him immediately. This was back in April 2020.

After some deworming, tick cleaning, hoping the owners would keep him happy and at home, covid keeping my parents stuck at home, buying a cat cage and neutering him, denial that this cat was theirs, and full garage takeover, I believe my parents are finally ready to admit that this cat was pretty much theirs. He has turned my father into a cat slave from 5am until midnight and taken over in priority over me for visiting hours to my parent’s house. Yes, he has visiting hours because if I visit too late I might wake up the little monster and he will ask to roam outside when coyotes roam the night.

What do Bushy’s owners think of all this? Oh yes, we have named him Bushy. His name given by his owners was Mimi because they thought he was female. We all thought he was a little female kitty too until he started to grow a bit, um, masculine. My parents spoke to the owners a few times and also texted that their kitty had tapeworms, ticks, fleas, needed to be neutered, and kept inside because there were coyotes around. The woman was a very kind lady that Bushy responded to lovingly, but her husband only brought the cat home as a mouser and said he wouldn’t spend money on him and cats were meant to be outside. When he came to take him home Bushy actually fled (we found out later from the lady that he often kicked him). The lady also offered to give my parents the cat, but at the time they were still very sad over Tigger and did not want anymore cats.

Well, you know how the story ends. My parents got him neutered, turned him into a fat sausage and currently feed him multiple breakfasts lunchees and dinners everyday. At one point they got a cat cage for him to rest after he was neutered and that became his preferred sleeping spot at night. He started requesting to come in at night and headed to his bed in the cage. How does he request to come in? Well, very simple, he finds my dad sitting by the family room patio door and meows. Nowadays he knows we can hear him even though no one is in sight because we often watch the backyard camera.

Bushy likes to roam around catching birds, lizards and napping at noon by the rose bushes. He might come in multiple times a day to the garage whenever he was hungry, thirsty, or just wanted to play. We think he visits the lady at home from time to time, but unfortunately, he would randomly get locked in by them if it was raining or they worried for his safety. He usually screams to come back out after missing first and second dinners.

Bushy’s favorite spot to sleep now is my camping chair. It was a takeover for sure. His favorite toys are my toes, string, his three way crinkly tube that I bought him for Christmas, and Mochi’s extra S-shaped scratching pad. Oh I am mistaken, his absolutely favorite toy is laser, of course, and sometimes his bouncy ball from my childhood bouncy ball collection.

Why does Bushy stay in the garage? I think mostly because my parents are not very used to how wild Bushy got during his time outside. They did bring him inside one night and he immediately attacked mom’s feet on the bed, and everything that he found interesting. Compared to Maine Coons I guess he is a bit wild to us. His claws used to frequently come out, or he would bite our arms and legs, and if he got really excited he had no issues doing a jump attack towards our face. He is a lot better now, but my parents still don’t know how to keep things clean with him rolling around in the dirt and mud and bringing back birds and mice. Dad pretty much let Bushy choose what he wanted to do.

I caught my dad bringing Bushy inside from time to time in his arms, and he even let him sit in Tigger’s spot in the living room couch! Bushy likes it there too, but he never stays long and always wants to go into the kitchen. We pretty much bring him inside now for a ‘tour of the house,’ every so often, but the rule is he cannot be let loose to walk around. He seems ok with this and he will literally let you hold him forever while he purrs and watches what everyone is up to in the house.

Tigger Left Us Today

I am in grief and in grief I must write. We stayed up all night watching Tigger breathing hard, lying down, and not himself. Today we had to put him to sleep. It was very peaceful and he was so beautiful still. It didn’t look or feel like he was dead. It felt more like he went to sleep and I still feel as if he were home with my parents right now.

After watching a few of our babies go, we usually pick up on the subtle signs. Cats get ill and very subtle things mean very serious underlying diseases. I just didn’t know it would be so sudden and so soon. Tigger had loose poo on and off and vomitted. The vet gave him Metronidazole and said it might be IBS. It cured him instantly and we were overjoyed, but the last few days on the medication he looked a bit listless and strange. Once he was off the medication he was himself again! That lasted a few days so we put him on the medication again. He was cured once again for a few days, but suddenly last night he seemed to be very uncomfortable, not able to sleep, panting, and just very very tired. It turned out he had acute diabetes. The vet said it is usually caused by another underlying disease and very difficult to regulate his blood sugar levels with insulin.

I am just sad that we had these two babies on raw diets and both had diseases that raw diets should have prevented. Liver cancer for Mochi, which was such am unexpected fluke at age of three, and now acute diabetes? Maybe it was in their genes. Maybe my friend was right when he said it’s like bigger dogs lived shorter lives; our bigger cats lived shorter than average lives. Whatever the reasons, I think it is safe to say that we will miss Tigger very much, and with him, the constant reminder of Mochi around my parent’s house.

I am sad but also relieved that this was the way Tigger went. He did not suffer too long in illness and he was his spunky self for almost all of his days with us. We had a couple of miracles and many scares that were nothing at all. I wished, as for all our cats in the past, that he’d stayed with us until at least 15. Dare I even ask for 18, 20? But it was his time, and we are at peace with it. I do believe their little spirits will come back to visit from time to time because I hear their distinct steps some nights around their favorite places. Tigger will probably be the last cat we will ever have because it is just too much of a heartache. It has been definitely easier this time compared to all the ones before. We learned to let go and enjoy the laughter they brought us.

Tigger and Mochi’s pictures actually bring me joy instead of grief right now. Maybe it is because somehow it felt like Tigger is just sleeping right now somewhere at my mom’s house. He doesn’t always hang around where we are, he just does his thing. Mochi was tougher because he liked to stick to us and be near us wherever we went. I know I will eventually start missing Tigger more when I can’t go rub his belly or play with him with his favorite rainbow string. But who knows, maybe he is hanging out in spirit along with Mochi at my parent’s house right now.

Tigger Loves Bedsheets

One of Tigger’s favorite pastimes is jumping on the bedsheets. When you change the sheets, you can wrap him up in there and swing him around, or toss it on the ground and he’ll sleep on it. Very typical cat, of course. What cat doesn’t like mommy’s bedsheets?

Pancake Tigger, Rolly Mochi

I guess I’m not very good at updating blogs. I ran into some old images from facebook memories from 8 years ago. They pretty much show tigger doing what he always does best, sit in pancake style, and Mochi looking like a rolly polly and chewing all the time.

New instagram account and catching up on their story

My good friend was telling me to do this for years, and I’ve finally decided to start an instagram account (@tiggermochi). These two kitties went through a lot of hardship and I had no heart to continue the blog a few years ago, so there will be a lot of catching up to do! Even though Mochi is no longer with us for 3 years now, I still think of them as two, and somehow refer to “the cats” instead of cat. Mochi’s old pictures never stopped making me laugh, so I think it is time to share them again. I’ve created an instagram account, Tiggermochi for these pictures.

Since the last posts on here, Tigger came down with a mysterious fungal infection in his lung that traveled through his lymph nodes and made him weak in the legs and out of balance.  We thought we were going to lose him, but a very good vet prescribed the right medication that slowly cured him and he is perfect today.  He did not need a spinal tap, or biopsy, or whatever crazy procedure the other vets suggested, so I can’t stress enough about getting second or third opinions.

Tigger initially lost weight, and Mochi seemed to go under the bed and come out bigger every morning. Eventually, by the time Tigger was fully recovered and asking Mochi to wrestle, Mochi was bigger than Tigger and pinned him down instead of being picked on. Mochi was 25lb at age three, and probably the biggest cat we’ve ever had!

We thought all was well, but somehow Mochi started sleeping all day and looking gloomy. It all happened very fast within three months, he somehow had liver cancer at the age of three! He was still very beautiful and loving when he left us, and I think he was spared from much suffering. We were distraught at the time, but we always think Mochi was a little angel sent to us to do a job and had other important things to do elsewhere. He left us with wonderful memories for a lifetime, and taught us how to let go peacefully. Animals will teach us more than we ever could learn by ourselves.

So how did Tigger handle it? Well, as breeder cats, they probably are used to brothers and sisters leaving them randomly. He came running everytime we came home expecting his little brother to be back. Eventually, we talked to him and I think he understood. We were afraid he would get depressed and sick again, but luckily that was not the case. Sometimes we mention Mochi and his ears pick up, so I know he remembers him too just like we do.

Tigger is very spoiled now, and between dad and him, they have formed some very exclusive routines together. We call him Prince tigger, and he will demand you greet him first whenever you enter the house. Each person has a special task to do for him. For instance, whenever I visit, I must open the laundry room and carry him in to see all its contents, and then carry him in the laundry basket all around the living room. Dad is the food department, massage department, and he must carry him outside for fresh air. Mom is also food and massage department, and must feed the birds and play with him.

Kickboxing tigger

The cats are definitely growing up, especially Tigger. Yesterday he kicked me in the nose an it felt like someone punched me. My head hurts today from it. I’m surprised he is fine and also surprised a little kitten can kick so hard. Last time Mochi only swiped my nose trying to jump over my face to catch his toy. Anyways, I called him Tigger the kickboxing cat and my mother said that’s why Mochi has to be chubby. (So he can withstand being bet up) He is still 2 oz. heavier at 11lb, but Mochi is slowly catching up!

First one on the chairs, couch, and table

I still haven’t decided who’s the naughtier of the two kittens because they randomly switch off. Mochi surprised me a few days ago because he jumped up onto the dining room chair to hide from tigger. Then I found him by himself on the table. He also took to hopping around the couches because he wanted to catch my hand massagger.

smokey used to pose near my purses, and it looks like the kittens do too. They both fall asleep on the job too.

Tigger and Plush Animals

I remember Pebble, my first cat, liked to toss around a stuffed animal bird and chew it up all over the house. Kitty used to wipe her lips to scent my Eeyore plush everyday (which I still have on my bed). Smokey didn’t care much. I’ve never met a cat who actually seems to adore soft furry stuffed animals until now. Tigger seems to really like them and will kneed and then center himself on top of them. I first noticed this when he chose our big stuffed bear in the stairway as his noble steed. That’s after kneeding and grooming it. His other favorite is my giant Totoro slipper that I use to warm my feet. It fits him perfectly (for now).  I guess when he grows up we will have to find him some bigger plushies to lie on hehehe.

Evolution of Kitten Sleeping

This was last Sunday when I came home. I was so tired, I decided to nap on the bed. Soon enough, Mochi comes to bite my toes, then Tigger joined in. They eventually got tired and fell asleep, and began the Evolution of Kitten Sleeping. It starts off with one trying to groom the other. Then biting. Then they just fall asleep on top of each other, and commence rolling around.
